View this post on Instagram Here's a picture of Sprout from earlier this month a week before the big stinky bloom! Sprout is a Titan Arum and they bloom what are called "carrion flowers". And boy, do those flowers live up to their name! The bloom is said to smell like rotting flesh. While this smell may be extremely grotesque to us, it is meant to attract flies, dung beetles, and other carnivorous insects to aid in pollination. Sprout lives in @longwoodgardens and he is doing a large part, along with the help of his caretaker, to aid in the continuous population of this species. While not considered endangered, the Titan Arum is considered vulnerable due to the constant deforestation in it's native home in Indonesia. #plants #plantfacts #sprout #weirdplants #titanarum #carrionflower A post shared by Natasha Martinez (@duzzitslow) on Jul 30, 2020 at 3:50pm PDT
